A new type of 3 dimensional urban space
Walk DVRC – DeVoeux Road Central
Location: Hong Kong SAR, China
Client: Walk DVRC Ltd.
Program: regeneration and pedestrianisation of 1 km of street in Hong Kong Central District
DeVoeux Road Central despite centrally located appears a bit dated, certainly compared to the glitzy streets adjacent. Walk DVRC, a local initiative wants to change this by partially pedestrianizing the street and reducing traffic.
The competition held was asking for innovative solutions for this central piece of Hong Kong. We took an equally innovative as pragmatic approach. Using and upgrading existing tram stops and turning them into three dimensional public spaces creates additional levels to accommodate new public programme and creates new activators in DeVoeux Road.
Residual spaces are changed in such a way that they can accommodate different use patterns: meeting, playing, acting… . This allows for different use scenarios throughout the day, throughout the week and throughout the year.
With reduced traffic and a rerouting of private transport, DVRC turns into a new type of public space using the DNA of Hong Kong and extending it into the future in a new way.
