From technical infrastructure to urban asset

Basin Regeneration Strategy

Location: Voronezh, Russia
Client: Department of Natural Resources and Ecology of Voronezh Oblast

Program: 60 km2  reservoir with surrounding urban regeneration area with the potential of 4 million m2 of development

Following an international masterplanning competition, MLA+ was selected to develop a strategic vision for the regeneration of Voronezh Reservoir. Voronezh Reservoir is an extensive 60 km2 water body between historic western city center and eastern extension from Soviet times that served mainly as industrial water supply. However it is not integrated into the urban structure and therefore lacks any value for the wider city.

A vision was developed based on site investigations and interaction with local players. The big idea “Voronezh City Park” integrates three strategies: ecological development of the lake, urban regeneration along its coast and innovation opportunities for business and city planning.

The result of our consultancy work is a hands-on strategy to transform Voronezh Basin. It combines existing with new initiatives and gives practical advice for action such as kick off strategies, pilot projects, funding sources etc.

Collaboration with clients and stakeholders is one of the success factors of our consultancy work. We introduced a more interactive way of working to this project and unlocked new potential formerly hidden through existing communication barriers, container thinking and lack of integrated working.
