New potential for a historic place
Development Concept for Fortress and Vicinity
Location: Brest, Belarus
Client: City of Brest, Brest 2019 development project
Programme: 700 ha masterplan for the area of the fortress to become main spot for the 2019 and millennium of the city events
MLA+ is involved in the process that is set to activate the transformation of the city of Brest. Located at the border with Poland, it has become famous for its fortress that has played the key role in the history of the city and of Europe as a whole. Currently functioning as a war memorial, the fortress has a great potential to become once again the heart of the city, the place, where activities take place and where content is generated.
In 2019 Brest will celebrate its millennium anniversary and that is a chance for the city to revisit its current state, understand better what the city is about and set the focus for the future. Here the fortress could play a vital role if transformed into an open platform, where east and west meet and create a unique atmosphere for the benefit of the city.
MLA+ in partnership with 8lines participated in developing the vision for the fortress transformation, defining a process instead of a finite plan. In April 2013 first steps towards realizing the vision were taken by local architectural students, who have organized the one week workshop in the walls of the fortress, thus making the real case to show how the place can be reactivated. The students had an opportunity to experience the peculiarity of the place and present their ideas for its future re-inhabiting. Using the results of this workshop, the next steps will be defined in discussion with the local stakeholders with more action to come this summer.
