Banshan Park Belt: Revealing the beauty of nature + protecting its magic
Last Wednesday, MLA+ together with Shenzhen based Landscape Architects HOPE and supported by MORE Landscape were declared winners of the international design competition for the Banshan Park Belt in Shenzhen’s Yantian District.
Often landscape design projects are about on creating scenery, landscapes and sensation. Our winning project “Listen to Yantian” takes a different approach. With its splendid views to the sea, its waterways and its natural setting, it all is already there. Therefore, we propose a system of routes, access and observation points. They allow to reveal the existing beauty of nature while protecting it at the same time.
The new Banshan Park Belt achieves this through three major elements:
- the “rhythm” of four zones,
- the “network” of routes and
- “100 follies” to experience the relationship of mountains and sea.
“Rhythm” is a functional division of the Banshan mountain. The four zones are designed for different target groups, with corresponding activities and landscape strategies.
The “Network” is the upgrading and extension of the Fire Patrol Road system as the traffic backbone of Banshan Mountain Park. As overlay to its basic fire-control functions, we enhance its pedestrian experience and we create different routes for the visitors. All together, they form a complete touristic route system.
The “Follies” are 100 destinations in nature, designed around the five human senses. The follies allow people to “Listen to Yantian” to experience the true echo between mountains and sea.
Each section of the 49-kilometer Banshan Park enhances the quality of life and of nature in Yantian district, adding a ‘great outdoors’ for all of Shenzhen.
The further development of the plan is already under way with realization scheduled to start in the second half of the year.
