Regenerating rivers are a tool to upgrade environmental and living quality in Shenzhen
MLA+ has been successful in two competitions for the regeneration of rivers flowing through Shenzhen in Southern China.
In a consortium with Shenzhen Lay-out (leader) and China Northwest Architecture Design and Research Institute MLA+ was selected to plan the upgrade of Shafu River and in a consortium with Hope Landscape and Huadong Engineering corporation we will take on Shajing River.
Both competitions asked for a concept how to clean the rivers and re-naturalize them while also adding urban qualities. For both rivers the teams developed two different approaches and two different answers to the topic of greened river. While Shafu River with its natural upstream environment and a completely urban downstream context asked for a contextual approach that sensitively responds to the surrounding environment, the solution for Shajing River is more autonomous, inserting an entirely new greened landscape with urban interventions.
Both projects are immediately continuing with schematic and design development phases with implementation expected to start in early fall of this year.
