Accommodating the growth of Berlin sustainably
Southern Extension of Blankenburg
Location: Berlin, Germany
Client: Senate Department for Housing and Urban Development of the State of Berlin
Program: Masterplan for a new district with housing, social infrastructure, commercial and industrial use
Berlin is growing rapidly in population. To accommodate the growth, the city has earmarked an area in Pankow district that allows using much of the existing transport infrastructure. On the 150ha site a new neighbourhood with approximately 6.000 dwelling units combined with the necessary social and commercial infrastructure, and a large park will emerge. Additionally, an area of 40 ha of industrial and large scale commercial use has to be integrated.
In a collaborative design process, we propose a new dense urban centre right at the edge of the district. The commercial areas are located east of it bordering existing allotment gardens. The new neighbourhood offers ample access to the open landscape giving a maximum of dwellings access to the historically grown greenery.
