A city facing the river

Guanlan River Regeneration

Location: Shenzhen, China
Client: Longhua District Administrative Committee

Program:
24 km2 Masterplan for the regeneration of the 15 km long Guanlan River Corridor and the creation of a new riverfront.

The Guanlan River flows through Longhua district in the North of Shenzhen. The area adjacent to the river suffers from major problems as a result of unplanned development and the absence of any unifying planning vision or control along the river’s course.

Our vision to develop a ‘City facing the river’ proposes a transformation of the existing urban fabric that values the heritage of the area and the communities that live there and proposes a way forward for the already existing local communities. They get the possibility to mitigate the problems they have at present, grow and be part of the new prosperous city that has been emerging rapidly in the region. The river is the vital and unifying element that ties together the communities of this district. In the future the area will become a piece of city that turns it’s face to the river instead of its back.
