Housing in the city and the garden

Ludlstrasse Neighbourhood

Location: Munich, Germany
Client: GEWOFAG Wohnen GmbH

Program:
13.600m2 housing and 4.300m2 social infrastructure including two kindergartens, neighbourhood center, social services, supported housing unit and artist studios

The ambition of for this affordable housing neighbourhood is challenging: High mix of special uses at ground level, noise protection towards motorways and tram tracks along the southern edge, masterplan with an ensemble of irregular point blocks. Our answer to this urban brief is to stay calm. Regular and efficient forms are accentuated by expressive balcony detailing. Open corner loggias loosen up the massing in the park like courtyard and offer a panorama view to the apartments in the point blocks. A layout with glazed balcony access towards the motorway provides noise protection while making the live in the buildings visible along the very long south façade. The laser cut balcony detailing gives the neighbourhood its own identity through playing with the typical pentagon-shaped form.
