A view beyond the site boundary

Brunecker Strasse

Location: Nürnberg, Germany
Client: Aurelis Real Estate GmbH

Program:
90 ha redevelopment of former railway yards. Several housing neighbourhoods and light industry quarters linked by a 30 ha landscape park. Incorporation of existing railway structures, landscape features and ecological zones

As railway yard was the site for a long time not accessible. The redevelopment plan offers the chance to bring the area back into the mental map and everyday life of Nürnberg’s citizens. We have therefore developed strategies that view the site beyond its spatial boundaries.

Landscape Park Nürnberg South
Through combining open spaces within and around the site, we propose a large 250 ha landscape park for South Nürnberg. This landmark project will get attention of all citizens and shift their perception of this forgotten part of the city. The evolution of this park from railway land to a full landscape is a central strategy.

Use the evolution time actively
The long duration of the transformation process demands, to use “time” actively to develop and promote the new landscape and emerging urban area, and therefore the growth of a new identity. We recommend to curate an “Active Process” in parallel to the physical plan comprising of:

Slow growth – Use time and space to let the new identity and landscape develop
Fast action – Find opportunities to act early and to promote change
Attract people – Bring special activities to this special area
Invite pioneers – Open up the unusual place
Inform, communicate, open eyes, and be transparent
Learn and adjust to changing circumstances
Celebrate and recognize achievement

A flexible structure with a strong backbone
The actual spatial masterplan features four neighbourhood modules set in a characteristic open space structure

Stages:
2015 International Urban Design Competition
