How to create a landmark?
The riverside plot of this project is cut into half by a metro viaduct. The site is both highly visible and constrained. How to create a landmark as this gateway to Nanheng district in South Guangzhou?
Double helix – memorable and economic
On an urban scale the open space extends below the viaduct and integrates the isolated plot into the urban fabric. The massing of the building starts as a basic volume. A double helix of volumetric shifts responds to the context and creates changing experiences for the users. As a three-dimensional atrium, one helix offers users chances to meet, rest and view out over the district. As a cascade of sky gardens the other helix brings the landscape up into the air. The façade responds to the sunlight and landscapes by embedding different façade elements in different orientations within a regular façade grid. Apart from the landmark quality the office floorplates are efficient and economical.
