Han’s Laser Headquarters

An office tower that can transform to housing in the future

Location: Shenzhen, China
Client: Han’s Laser Corp.

Programme:
50.500 m² GFA, 220 m high office tower with parking garage that can be transformed into a residential tower with a commercial plinth

Transformation often is an afterthought in architecture. Hardly ever, buildings are designed for easy change of their use later on. Our proposal for Han’s Laser Tower is different. Initially serving as office tower, the client is thinking longer term and planning to transform parts of its future headquarter into apartments.

The design of the tower responds to that challenge: Vertical circulation, facade and the overall massing are designed in such a way, that they can house both. Lounges – special floors in the towers, located where the shape of the building changes – provide for meeting spaces in office mode or communal uses like fitness club, tea lounge or the like in residential mode. The sculptural facade provides shadow and in residential mode can also house loggias. The plinth serves as a parking garage that can become a commercial center when the building is turned into an apartment building.
