Railway yard

A new rational district with heritage as place maker

Location: Kaliningrad, Russia
Client: Glorax Development

Programme:
Masterplan for a new waterfront neighborhood, redevelopment of old railway yard.

Kaliningrad is developing as the new destination for tourists as well as Russian residents choosing for comfortable living close to the Baltic Sea. This leads to a wave of urban redevelopment with more and more areas are being upgraded.

We were invited to develop a vision for an inner city area, that currently is occupied by a railway yard. The planned neighborhood is sitting next to the future museum quarter and is bounded by the river waterfront and by the Kaliningrad green ring. Its key feature is a restored fortification gate. Our plan uses these features as modifiers of a rational grid, adding richness and places with in the layout.

The plan is structured such that is gives views and connects heritage to the system of quarters encircled by an inner green ring, following the former railway tracks.
