New station = new impulse
Station Redevelopment

Programme: Masterplan and architectural concept for a station area redevelopment
The enclave Kaliningrad become more and more important as a place of exchange between Russia and the European Union. Within this enclave the city of Kaliningrad plays a crucial role as a transport hub and the area’s most important commercial center. Until now, most commuting and tourist traffic takes place by car or bus. The local administration wants to change this and use the opportunity to upgrade its sleepy railway station.
Our two proposals for the new station and public transport interchange both propose a higher density development around the station. Commercial ground floors, office buildings and new apartments create a mix that is active around the clock. The station, rather than being an isolated building, is fully integrated into the development and therefore overcomes the usual fencing and the resulting disconnection of the urban fabric.
Two layouts have been proposed for the new station: One that opts for a skyline with a cluster of higher buildings that are also visible from the city’s main square. The other quotes the historic architectural vernacular of Kaliningrad from the time when it was still ‘Koenigsberg’ with its medieval pitched roofs and induvial buildings standing side by side.
