Ligovsky Potok Park

A park as mediator and a new ‘third place’

Location: Saint Petersburg, Russia
Client: Glorax Development

Programme:
Landscape and programming strategy for 0,4 ha site.

Red brick buildings occupied the site of a meat factory and adjacent pharmaceutical warehouses in the industrial belt of Saint Petersburg. It has been cleared to make room for new residential buildings currently under construction.

The man made emptiness is planned to come to life again as a new public space – squeezed between an existing dormitory for athletes and the new residential quarter. With the opening of a new metro station, the place will become part of an active route.

Our proposal takes the existing context into account and demonstrates principles we promote for the wider grey belt areas for which we have developed a regeneration strategy: Here, new public spaces should show their “third nature”. They should not hide their industrial past and use textures and artifacts of the past and include a special Saint Petersburg DNA.

Our proposal is based on these three principles: the main surface is a red brick surface, which then evolves to create waves, through which we see the “third nature’ taking over and devising space for functional spaces for circulation, contemplation and activity. A roof is lining the entrance moment and creates the new face towards for Ligovsky prospect.
