Turning a run down post-war shopping center into a new neighbourhood hub
Neighbourhood Center Transformation
Location: Munich, Germany
Client: GWG Städtische Wohnungsgesellschaft München mbH
Program: Mixed-use project with residential, retail, commercial use and a community and daycare centre; Landscape re-design of the wider area
The 2 ha site is located at the centre of the neighbourhood of Neuaubing a Munich suburb. It is a typical medium density post-war estate.
To give a new impulse to the area and to cater to contemporary needs, the existing retail center will be replaced by shopping facilities and a more divers urban program: a neighbourhood centre for families, day-care, housing and commercial service facilities. This new center will be embedded in a re-organized and redesigned public space that gives the existing plaza a new identity.
The project was selected in a design competition where the jury remarked: “The placement of the volumes and the design of the resulting urban spaces is outstanding. In particular, the scale and the strong ensemble effect in the existing environment characterize this design. It has the ability to develop its own spatial force in the midst of the row and point buildings of the 1960s.”
