A new learning environment

Senezh Management Lab in Solnechnogorsk RU

Location: Solnechnogorsk, Russia
Client: Solnechnogorsk City Administration in partnership with 10 business management schools

Program: Masterplan and architectural concept design for 60.000 m² educational functions and supporting uses for a management school.

How we learn and where we learn is currently in the process of change. This draws traditional learning environments into question. Senezh Management Lab is an attempt to invent a new learning environment. Located an hour’s drive outside Moscow, the site of a former art school will be transformed into a business management laboratory – a place to meet, exchange and develop new ideas in a natural setting.

The masterplan makes use of the existing buildings and natural assets. The western edge of the site features a higher density of buildings including a central hub building, a guest house and teaching facilities. Umbrellas – concrete structures cover the paths from the entrance to these buildings and down to the shore of the adjacent lake. In the busier summer months, these structures can also transform into additional gathering spaces.

The eastern part of the site remains largely natural, promoting movement and exchange in a natural and contemplative environment. Here smaller architectural interventions create accommodation and spaces for different forms of teaching and learning: collective or individual, secluded or connected, outside or inside.

In its layout, the new campus of the Senezh Management Lab reflects the changes of the seasons. In winter focussing on two main connecting axes, in summer utilizing the entire site for added learning experiences – learning that is more than sitting in a classroom. Learning that stimulates body and brain in multiple ways.
