Retail as the driver of urban development
Westbund Retail-led Masterplan
Location: Shanghai, China
Client: Westbund Area Development Committee
Programme: 15 km² retail led masterplan
The Westbund is a 15 km long redevelopment project along Shanghai’s Huangpu River. Former industrial and harbor land is transformed into a waterfront park and adjacent development areas. A great start has been made. The new park has become a very popular destination. An arts and cultural program helped to kickstart the redevelopment and to make the Westbund known. The local authority approached our team for a tool to integrate the waterfront park and the adjacent development.
The Westbund Retail Masterplan proposes a retail system around four ingredients: the combination of plots into themed retail+cultural areas, the combination of retail and cultural program for a unique customer experience, high accessibility centered around access points of the metro, parking and slow routes, as well as a coherent open space network to support people flow.
The result is a masterplan for seven retail+culture areas including advice on retail character, spatial layout and retail volumes.
