A future for industrial heritage

Sinterbeckenplatz

Location: Esch-Sur-Alzette, Luxembourg
Client: Fonds Kirchberg Luxembourg

Program:
1.780m2 design of the Sinterbeckenplatz at the former steal factory Esch-Belval

The special atmosphere and location of the old Sinter factory (Sinterbeckenplatz) can be experienced without radically transforming it. In the plan for the new Sinter factory we use industrial remains as a starting point for the new destination. The Sinterbekken are connected by an underground structure and the upper square. This simple procedure makes it possible to experience and use the location.

The water and patio garden are both accessible via a ramp from the central square. The underground building connects the former coal basin with the public area. Together these new elements and their program not only create space, but also a new identity based on the rich past. With the help of local loans, the possibilities of the program can be further developed to shape the center of the new Belval.
