Colonization of the new land
Vazilevskiy Island Waterfront Park
Location: St. Petersburg, Russia
Client: LLC LSR. Real Estate – North-West
Program: Landscape design for waterfront of the reclaimed lands on Vasilevskiy Island.
The main challenges of the project are the non-existent base landscape, the monotonous micro rayons and the impossibility of direct access to the water. In that cotext of litttle direct reference, we suggest to introduce characteristic landscapes taken from a wider context: traditional cultural and natural landscapes of the coast of the Gulf of Finland . We call this approach «the landscape colonization of the new coast».
- We plan to develop landscape colonization in three directions:Creation of typical habitat, such as dunes, alder trees, and pine groves. Such landscapes will naturally protect the coastline from the wind and properly distribute the flow of visitors to the park.
- We add five characteristic cultural elements of the coast: manor house, village, reclaimed beach, port and fort. Each of the five spaces has its own internal logic and interacts with water in its own way. Cultural landscapes are interconnected by the active space of the street and natural bridges, where no big activity is expected.
- The street lining the built up area is enriched by three scenarios of use – from a one-way street and public transport to a fully pedestrian boardwalk.
We believe that this approach will help to create an attractive space that has a new, yet contextual identity in St. Petersburg and the widerGulf of Finland coastline.
